Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazillian jiu jitsu is a martial arts that uses grappling techniques to control opponents and submissions to end the fight. The martial art's main idea is skills over strength. The ideal of anyone being able to control the fight regardless of the challenger's force. Jiu jitsu was first introduced in Brazil by Mitsuyo Maede to Carlos Gracie and his brothers in 1920s. The brothers modified the techniques of jiu jitsu and combined self defence skills to be used for the streets. In 1993 the UFC featured the first brazillian jiu jitsu mixed martial art fighter named Royce Gracie. Royce demonstrated to the world the art of brazillian jiu jitsu and how effective it is. This inspired the learning interest in the martial arts in the states. California now has the largest population of jiu jitsu students outside Brazil.
Every class starts with stretching, workout, and drills made to improve physical conditioning, coordination, and endurance. After the warm up, the students are split up by their level for a demonstration of techniques of the day. Then the students pair up with a partner to practice the move. At the last 30 minutes of the class the students will get to spar. The beginners do not spar their first few class. They start out by watching and understanding the fight system then they get to spar with an advance student to guide them through the fight.
